Plain Words Running data, in plain words.

Parth Dixit

Founder, Inertial

I build Inertial, a running app, and I write everything on this site. That is the whole masthead — there is no editorial team, and there is no byline called "the Inertial team". If a number here is wrong, it is wrong because I got it wrong, and the changelog on each page will say when I fixed it.

Why I write this and not something else

I spend my working days on the unglamorous end of running data: Kalman filters that decide where you actually were, autopause thresholds, heart-rate cleaning, the difference between the distance your watch recorded and the distance you ran. The recurring discovery is that runners are not short of numbers. They are short of anyone willing to say what a number means, how it was computed, and when to ignore it.

So the rule for this publication is narrow and strict: every figure carries a source or a stated method. Where the evidence genuinely does not settle a question, the page says so instead of picking a side and sounding confident. That sentence — "we do not have a good number for this" — is more useful than a made-up one, and you will find it here more than once.

What I will not do here

No ads. No affiliate links. No sponsored anything. Nothing on this site is gated behind an email address, and no article body asks you for anything at all: the calculators are free and account-free, and the one line at the bottom of a page is the entire ask. Inertial is paid for by race organisers paying for registrations, never by athletes, which is why an article does not have to earn its keep by selling you a shoe.

I also will not publish anything about an individual runner's data. Aggregate figures, when they eventually appear here, will be opt-in, location-free, and reported only for cells with at least fifty distinct runners.

Still to fill in

This page is deliberately short on the credentials an author page normally carries — years running, personal bests, races, the watches and straps I train with, and links to profiles elsewhere. They are not written yet, and inventing them would break the first rule of the site.

Until Parth supplies them (CONTENT_ENGINE.md §15, decision 1), the pages that need lived experience carry a visible "not written yet" block rather than a plausible story, and sameAs in the structured data is empty rather than guessed.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, tell me and I will fix it and log the fix. Pages carry a changelog for exactly that reason, and dateModified moves only when the substance moves — not to look fresh.
